Getting to and from Calcutta
Flights:
We recommend arriving 4 days in advance to manage jetlag. We also recommend flying directly to Kolkata (CCU). If you fly through Delhi, ensure you have Uber downloaded ahead of time . You will likely need to transfer between terminals, and it is not walkable. If you are a woman travelling alone, we would not recommend flying through Delhi.
Visa:
You will need to apply for a visa ahead of time. Unless you’re planning to visit India again in the near future, we recommend the 30 day e-Visa. You can apply 30 days prior to traveling, mid-Nov at the earliest. This website will be updated with 30 day e-visa application instructions by 09Nov2024.
Begin your e-Visa application here: e-Visa Application
Reminder: Passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months before entering the country - your passport expiration must be later than 10Jun2025.
Phone/Data:
We recommend paying for an international phone plan or an e-SIM. For traveling, Wi-Fi can be expensive and hard to access in airports.
Check with your provider if they offer an international plan.
In Kolkata, Wi-Fi is available at most establishments, but it will likely not be available in transit.
Cori has T-Mobile and has free data and texting in India; however, it was very slow when not on Wi-Fi.
Vaccinations:
We recommend talking to your doctor 6-8 weeks in advance, noting the part of India you will be traveling to, and the time of year (Kolkata, West Bengal in December).
Reviewing the CDC recommendations and accounting for the time of year and area of India, suggested vaccines are Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis, Measles-Mumps-Rubella, Hepatitis A, and Japanese Encephalitis.
Hotel Suggestions
We recommend booking sooner rather than later as December is a popular time to visit Kolkata and hotels book up fast.
